Ensuring your dog is getting adequate exercise is essential to managing their weight. Walking is the most obvious choice, however most dogs likely don’t get enough exercise this way. This ASPCA advises that two walks around the block and ten minutes in your backyard are not sufficient, especially for puppies and certain dog groups such as sporting, herding or terrier breeds. Hamsters-owners have it lucky: one small wheel and their pet's exercise requirements are met.
Fortunately there are other ways to keep your dog active, including golf. Some genius has actually invented a Doggy Driver, which allows you to work on your golf swing while your dog runs after the ball you just hit.
If you live in a colder climate where year-round golf is not an option, activities like swimming and cycling may not be feasible either and I'm not sure how receptive your dog will be if you try to force him on a treadmill. In that case, you may have to bite the bullet, and bundle Rover and yourself up for a brisk walk. Even if you detest the idea of animals dressed as humans, it is imperative you ensure your dog stays warm. A sweater or jacket may be necessary, as well as booties to protect the paws of smaller dogs.
