Everything is wrong with EcoEverything

Posted by Leafy Green on November 13, 2007 6:09 PM Filed Under: Shopping

Despite how the name sounds, "Fiber Options" is not a chocolate flavored laxative biscuit.  It's actually a small chain of eco-friendly stores that claims to be the biggest retailer of eco-friendly stuff in Western Canada.

Now normally I'm willing to be pretty forgiving with a cottage-industry level online store that sells eco-friendly products.  However, this site is so typical of the hundreds and thousands of bad eco-sites out there I thought I'd post it here so I can crucify it publicly.

The news pages is updates once a year... and they stopped updating it in 2004!  The site looks like it was designed in 1998 and hasn't been changed since.  They have online shopping.... sort of.

These guys have 3 retail locations including one in Whistler, BC!  (It's like Aspen only nicer and in Canada.)  These guys have money, but when you go to their web site it seems like they just don't care.  Which is too bad becuase I bet they carry great products.

So for all of you proprietors of your own little online eco-stores, hit the jump and see how not to attract customers online.

I would rather you commented on the products than the looks of the site. Are their products "green" meaning and here is the real difficulty! Are there products eco-friendly, safe for human health, independently tested, fairly traded, sustainably and equitably produced? There are so many companies out there greenwashing, I think we can hope that sites like this one would go beyond looks to what really matters - content!
