Carbon-free cooking with the Sun Oven

Posted by Leafy Green on September 24, 2007 2:54 PM Filed Under: Food, Shopping, Energy, Gifts

Able to reach temperatures of 400° F, the Sun Oven can be used just like a conventional oven and is a truly fuel-free way of cooking.  You simply pop your food items into the oven and point the oven at the sun.

It's 100% solar powered and a fantastic gift for outdoor enthusiasts.  Sun Ovens are used in 126 countries throughout the world, including many developing nations where these ovens have helped combat deforestation by replacing convential wood-burning ovens.

Are Sun Ovens kind of quirky and weird?  At first glance, perhaps.  It probably isn't a permanent replacement for your conventional oven, but on sunny days it's a great way to enjoy guilt-free cooking off the grid.

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Snails and slugs are the mortal enemies of plant-loving gardeners the world over. You don't need chemicals to combat these slimy, plant-munching critters. Try surrounding your precious plants with rough material such as crunched-up eggshells, gravel and sand. Strips of copper can also keep pests away by giving them a mild electric shock. Until snails start wering sneakers, these two ideas should help you protect your plants naturally.
