A great organic lawn care cheat sheet

Posted by Leafy Green on September 28, 2007 8:39 AM Filed Under: Gardening, Home

The Organic Landscape Alliance has a great cheat sheet that highlights the differences between organic versus conventional landscaping, lawn care tips, and a troubleshooting guide to help with common insect and weed problems.

Here's an excerpt from the fact sheet intro:

The guiding principle of organic lawn care is to nourish the soil. In this way, it differs fundamentally from chemical lawn care, which focuses on feeding the grass. Restoring and protecting soil health is crucial for the maintenance of a lush, naturally pest and disease resistant lawn. A healthy soil is alive. A diverse collection of organisms (many too small to see with the human eye) interact in complex and intricate ways. Together they break down organic matter, make nutrients available for plant uptake and aerate the soil. Soil aeration is important for water storage and air exchanges. Research shows that chemical fertilizers and pesticides degrade soil life and decrease the level of biological activity.

Hit the jump to download the guide. (You'll have to click the link on the page.  Warning: it's a Microsoft Word document so your virus checking software might give you a warning.)

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day To help naturally heat your home during the chill of winter, be sure to open blinds and curtains in rooms that face the sun. The sunlight will create a natural greenhouse effect and help heat your home naturally. Be sure to cover your windows again once the sun has gone down to help prevent heat from escaping through the glass.
