Backpackers are a different breed. They forsake campgrounds, outhouses, marked trails and creature comforts so they can explore the wilderness with nothing more than they can carry on their backs. Because they travel light, they also like to tread lightly and leave the great outdoors unspoiled so other enthusiasts can enjoy it.
Backpacking Fun is a great resource even for backpacking beginners. They have pictures, book recommendations, a US parks guide, ecology links and tons of other information.
Here are some tips from their overview of camp ethics:
- • First thing is to always plan ahead and prepare thoroughly.
- • Be careful where you hike and camp, and be mindful of sensitive areas.
- • Use correct methods when its time to dispose of your trash, fish guts, wash water, human and cooking waste.
- • When having a campfire think Indian fire and save some wood for next time.
- • Never feed, throw sharp rocks, or attemp to inflict harm to the wildlife unless left with no other option.
- • When in bear country always use bear proof food storage container.
- • Resist the temptation to bring home natural souvineers or ancient artifacts that you might run across while on your journey.
- • Never wash anything including yourself in lakes, streams, or springs.
- • Leave only footprints take only pictures.
