A couple of weeks ago we told you about Harrison Ford's public service announcement in which he had his chest waxed to demonstrate the painful effects of deforestation. At the time, the PSA hadn't yet made its way onto YouTube so instead we posted a video of an unrelated contest where normal guys had their chests stripped of hair after Steve Carell went through the experience during the filming of The 40-Year Old Virgin.
It appears someone finally got around to posting Harrison's actual PSA, so here it is folks: Indiana Jones has his chest groomed for a cause. It remains to be seen if anything that occurs in the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull film actually compares to this kind of pain. Though in all fairness, we only see a small section of hair being removed here, so he could have gritted his teeth and bared it for this one take and then left the one awkward, hairless patch as-is rather than having the entire chest done.
Watch the video below and decide for yourself if Harrison's point is clear or if they should have shown the whole gruesome removal process to really drive it home.

This Sexy Vegan video is admittedly cheating just a bit since it's not one of his true, full-length features. This cooking project was actually undertaken in between his first and second real episodes, however it's pretty amusing just the same.
This time around he's making Banizzle, a creation one of his friends invented that is a nice alternative to the traditional camping favorite, s'mores. It's a pretty simple dessert you can make while barbecuing or camping this summer since the only heat required is that of a grill or campfire. All you need are some bananas with the peel intact, chocolate and peanut butter.
A couple of warnings:
- The end result may not look as appetizing as some of the Sexy Vegan's other creations, but camping food is supposed to be messy and gooey right? When was the last time a roasted marshmallow won an award for aesthetic appeal after all?
- There's one instance where some a passer-by drops the f-bomb, so if you're at work or find that offensive, you may want to skip a few seconds ahead approximately one minute and 25 seconds into the video.
This video will have to suffice until we get another full recipe from The Sexy Vegan, but for now enjoy some more of his alcohol-induced humor!

In her attempts to do as her blog name suggests, the GreenDweller has examined ways to reduce the environmental impact of taking a long, hot shower. It turns out that reducing the temperature of your shower by as little as 10 degrees can save a significant amount of carbon. If you're not a believer, read her assessment for proof.
I’m the kind of person that fights off the cold morning chill with a scalding hot shower. However, I’ve learned that taking showers that are too hot actually cause your skin to be dryer and less healthy. In addition, although shower length is generally how carbon output is reduced, shower temperature also effects the amount of energy needed. So by dropping my shower temperature a few degrees I can not only help reduce my carbon output, but improve the health of my skin. Tricks like this, which improve quality of life while helping the environment, are my favorite kind of green living.
So how much can we save? My residence hall shower isn’t new in the least, so I can safely assume that a 10 minute shower uses about 25 gallons (200lbs) of water. Heating it to scalding, about 120 F, from 60 F takes 12000 BTU. But heating the same amount of water to just 110 F uses only 10000 BTU.
(200lb)(120-60)=12,000 BTU (200lb)(110-60)=10,000 BTU 12,000-10,000=2,000 BTU
That difference of 2000 BTU is equivalent to .586 kWh a day. As my university uses coal power, it means 1.227 lbs less carbon released each day. Over a year, that’s 447.86 lbs of carbon. Putting this in perspective, with the energy and carbon savings you could instead keep 5 10w CFLs (40w equivalent) on for 10 hours a day. All for giving up just 10 extra degrees of heat in my shower, ones I likely won’t even notice.
Now this is just one specific way to reduce the carbon impact of your shower. As I live in a residence hall it’s really the only aspect I can control, besides with the length of my showers. If I were to reduce that time by even a minute, that’s an extra .36 lbs of carbon saved per day. But if you want to do more, here are some easy tricks you might be able to use that are even easier:
- Install a low-flow shower head and use 50% less water (1.8lbs of carbon a day with a 10min shower). Also look for one with a stop valve so you can soap up without wasting water.
- get an insulating blanket for your old water heater
- turn down the heat on your water heater
- get a tankless water heater
- and for the really ambitious, install a solar hot water heating system (no more carbon guilt!)
Pretty nifty, isn't it? That's not all the GreenDweller has to say, so check out her blog for more ideas and information.

If you're looking for a good weekend project to keep you busy this weekend, how about building your own raised planter bed? The advantage of a planter bed is that it will conserve water because it requires less than a traditional garden and you can include a greater variety of plants. Then there's the fact that not everyone has the ideal setting or soil conditions for a regular garden, making this a great alternative.
Watch the video tutorial below to see just how to go about the project and put those soon-to-be-green thumbs (and the rest of your hands) to work!

As the cost of gas goes up (and up and up), it may be having a positive impact on the environment. More drivers are currently putting the SUVs in their garages (or trading them in!) in favor of older, more fuel efficient cars. Honda and Toyota's manufactured a decade or two ago seem to be the most popular choices.
The only catch is that air quality groups warn older vehicles may be prone to more leakage and evaporative emissions, so a tune-up will likely be necessary. However given the cost of gas in a bigger vehicle over time, the initial cost to fix-up an older car is increasingly becoming a more appealing option.

On Monday we wrote about the theory some scientists have claiming global warming and overfishing could be increasing the number of incidents where sharks attack human beings.
Or perhaps there are just a lot of idiots roaming the beaches of California and Mexico pulling stunts like the guy you'll see in the video below. Welcome to the activity of shark surfing. The concept is simple. Step 1: Take a few big hunks of bloody meat and tie them to the end of a fishing line. Yes, we'll call it bait. Step two: Toss your surfboard over the side of a boat, followed by the baited line and then jump in after them. Step 3: Mount your surfboard and grab the other end of the fishing pole. Step 4: Wait for Jaws to find you (or rather the baited end of the line). Say a silent prayer that he grabs the proper end of the fishing line. Step 5: Hang on while you go on the ride of your life. Step 6: If you're on the beach observing this, ponder the great mystery of why natural selection hasn't taken care of yahoos like this guy.

Since the Sexy Vegan has been MIA lately (we miss you, come back to us!) another cooking guru was sought out. Ursula isn't quite as funny, but then again, she doesn't seem to be aided by the Sexy Vegan preparation staple of gin and vodka either. Regardless, she's still got some good ideas.
Today she demonstrates how to make a raw, vegetarian pizza. With the price of meat and wheat driving up the cost of a traditional, restaurant pizza, alternatives such as this allow you to create a different treat so you don't have to completely deprive yourself of the finer things in life. This recipe substitutes the typical crust and pizza toppings like greasy cheese and fatty pepperoni for a dehydrated crust made from almonds, flax seeds and sunflower seeds, with almond cream, tomato sauce and fresh, raw veggies as toppings.
Ursula is a bit of a liar and promises to talk more about the dehydrated crust later, however the video never actually gets around to covering that information. Don't worry faithful readers, we would never leave you hanging like that. See a recipe for dehydrated crust below and watch the video to see how to put the whole pizza together once the crust portion is taken care of!
Pizza Crust
1½ c almonds, ground
3 carrots, ground
½ c pumpkin seeds
½ c sunflower seeds
¾ c flax seeds, soaked in 1 c water for a few hours
Grind almonds and carrots in juicer with a blank screen or grind finely in a food processor. Blend all ingredients together in a K-tec or food processor until it is a fine grainy texture. Spread mixture out ¼" thick onto teflex sheets. Score into desired size. Dehydrate at 110 degrees overnight, approx 8 hours. Then flip onto mesh screen, remove teflex and continue 3-4 hours or until dry.

Zoos in Germany seem to get their fair share of cute animals. First Flocke, the adorable polar bear cub made her official world debut at the Nuremberg City Zoo in March and now the Berlin Zoo has their own baby animal to show off.
Manjula, an Indian rhino, was born just this past Sunday but it seems she's already discovered that she loves the spotlight and happily posed for a group of photographers. In face, she seems pretty patient already given she's just a few days old.
Only about 3,000 Indian rhinos still live in the wild, classifying them as an endangered species.
Watch the video below to see Manjula's first brush with fame.

Despite his last name, Seth Green's reasons for purchasing his Toyota Prius weren't necessarily to minimize his vehicle's impact on the environment. Unlike Leonardo DiCaprio, who loves his Prius so much he may ask it to move into his new eco-friendly condo with him, Seth's desire to tighten his purse strings served as the inspiration for his purchase.
Green says, "I bought a Prius because gas was just outrageous and I'm cheap. And I was commuting a lot in L.A. driving to and from work. It's horribly ugly. It's not an attractive car at all.
"I had that thing going 111 miles per hour out to San Diego so it goes fast. And the best thing about it is I have those stickers on it so I can drive single-passenger in the high occupancy vehicle lane."
Well at least he's honest about it. It feels far more sincere than Paris Hilton's lame attempt to convince the public that she really cares about the earth by adding a GMC Yukon hybrid to her fleet of vehicles. Going green is the new "it" thing to do in Hollywood, so it's somewhat amusing that Seth owned up to his true motivation. Does anyone else find it ironic (and maybe a breath of fresh air) that a guy who's been acting since the 80s and likely has a relatively healthy bank account describes himself as "cheap" and would rather drive this than an overpriced, flashy vehicle?
Speaking of Seth and amusement, you can watch the clip below to see some of his more notable work in the Austin Powers film trilogy.
