The many uses of lemons

Posted by Pinky Bean on February 17, 2010 5:37 AM Filed Under: Home

Clean your microwave, coffee pot or windows! Lemons are relatively cheap in relation to the overpriced cleaners you'll find on store shelves and you also don't have to deal with the issue of excessive packaging or guilt of throwing the remains in a landfill.

Lemons deodorize, disinfect and remove grease, so it's no wonder they're one of the most common natural cleaners used in the home. To show you how easy it is to use lemons in your own home, check out the three videos below for inspiration. Don't forget to buy a few extra just in case you really are ready for a glass of lemonade once you've completed all of your cleaning tasks!

Treat a sunburn naturally

Posted by Pinky Bean on July 3, 2009 2:47 AM Filed Under: Health, Travel

In a perfect world you wouldn't have to worry about sunburn. You could go outside without religiously applying lotion to any and all exposed skin and never have cause for concern. However, this isn't a perfect world and few things in the world compare to the discomfort of a sunburn. Anytime you stretch or move the wrong way, you feel it. If a friend claps you on the back - well, let's just say you would probably be forgiven for clocking him or her.

Unfortunately vacations are ripe with the potential for sunburns. If you're in a warm, sunny climate there's a good chance you're probably spending a great deal of time outdoors, whether you're lying on the beach or doing a lot of walking. If you apply sunscreen properly and frequently, especially after going in water, you should be fine. However there's always the chance your sunscreen application may be neglected and even just one time can leave you with a nasty, painful burn.

If you're far from home, you'll want the most convenient option to treat a sunburn. Watch the video below to see a natural way to do so, and even though it's not covered in this tutorial, be sure to travel with aloe vera gel. The general rule of thumb is you hopefully won't need it if you have it, but as soon as you go away without it, you'll be wishing, praying, crying for the cool relief.

Treat a bee sting the natural way

Posted by Pinky Bean on June 27, 2009 2:56 AM Filed Under: Health, Travel

Like it or not, it's bee season. Those little guys (or in some cases, frightfully large) will be out and about conducting regular bee business like pollinating and making honey and producing wax for beeswax candles. No matter your outdoor activity of choice, you'll inevitably encounter them. With all of the news surrounding massive bee deaths last year, you might feel guilty killing one should it land on you. It would of course be preferable to avoid getting stung altogether, but sometimes it's unavoidable.

Thankfully there's a simple and natural process for removing stingers and treating the pain of stings. The bonus is, if you're on vacation and not close to your hotel or a pharmacy, a local restaurant and your wallet should hopefully have what you need to take care of the problem. Intrigued yet? Watch the video below to see how you can easily and effectively treat a bee sting.

Blast from the Past: Go green and get clean

Posted by Pinky Bean on October 4, 2008 1:15 PM Filed Under:

This past week we've featured several tips and ideas for green-ifying the home cleaning process, however this is far from the first time Ecollo has touched on the subject.

Last year when Ecollo was just a baby and Leafy Green lived here all by himself, he suggested some eco-friendly cleaning home remedies and the 10 green cleaning items that you can pick up at the supermarket to assist in the process.

Early in January, we also suggested ways to clean up your act for the new year, though the tips are just as relevent now as they were then, as is the idea of polishing your silverware, cleaning out your microwave using lemons and cleaning your computer with some good old vinegar.

It's almost enough to make you wonder why consumers even bother heading down the cleaning aisle at the local store and tempting thesmselves with chemical-laden products!

Leafy Green's Tip of the Day Bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes to refrigerators. Many items we stick in our fridges can actually be kept in a cool panty or cellar instead. Also ask yourself: do you really need room in your freezer to store twenty frozen pizzas at a time? If you buy fresh foods regularly you'll find you can come to rely less on keeping your foodstuffs on ice for weeks on end.
